Why Community Matters: Combating Alzheimer’s Through Belonging

World Alzheimer’s Month & International Day of Charity: Two Moments, One Mission

September isn’t just World Alzheimer’s Month— it’s also home to the International Day of Charity on the 5th September, a global call to action to support those in need.

Both events share a common goal: to bring people together in compassion, generosity, and solidarity. For the nearly one million people in the UK living with dementia, and the families caring for them, this spirit of giving can be life-changing.

At Foresters Friendly Society, we believe no one should face life’s challenges alone. Our Membership offers belonging, friendship, and emotional care.

People living with dementia are one third more likely to feel lonely, and two-thirds of carers say they experience loneliness (Alzheimer’s Society, 2024). This isolation can:

  • Worsen cognitive symptoms
  • Accelerate decline
  • Deeply affect emotional wellbeing

And it’s not just the individual—carers and families often feel overwhelmed, juggling responsibilities with limited support.

The UK Picture: A Growing Challenge

As our population ages, the need for local, people-first support networks becomes more urgent than ever.
