Helping Hands Need Care Too: Convalescent Grants to Help Families and Carers

When someone we love faces serious illness or surgery, we instinctively step into the role of carer preparing meals, managing medications, attending appointments, and providing comfort during difficult moments. We do it willingly, driven by love and commitment, but many carers can feel exhausted and overwhelmed.

The truth is, caring for others can take an enormous toll on our own physical and emotional health. And when carers break down, it affects everyone.

That’s why Foresters Friendly Society’s discretionary Convalescent Grant recognises something crucial: recovery isn’t just about the patient, it’s about supporting the entire family.

The Hidden Cost of Caring

Behind every recovering patient is often an unpaid carer dedicating countless hours to their loved one’s wellbeing. While this commitment is invaluable, the personal cost can take its toll.

The statistics paint a sobering picture:

  • More than half (57%) of UK carers report feeling overwhelmed ‘often’ or ‘always’, according to Carers UK
  • Chronic stress, exhaustion, and emotional strain, commonly known as “caregiver burnout” affect the majority of family carers
  • Many carers neglect their own health while focusing entirely on their loved one’s needs

How Discretionary Convalescent Grants Support the Whole Family

Foresters’ discretionary Convalescent Grants offer something rare and precious: respite that benefits everyone.

For the Recovering Individual

Professional convalescent homes provide:

  • Recovery care in peaceful, supportive environments
  • Assistance tailored to individual needs
  • Proper rest in a setting designed for healing
  • Social interaction with others on similar recovery journeys

For the Carer

This isn’t just about “taking a break”, though that’s important too. It’s about:

Rest and Recuperation

Respite care enables carers to take essential time out to look after themselves, helping prevent exhaustion and burnout.

Financial Relief

Convalescent grants help to cover the costs associated with convalescent facilities, removing the financial barrier that stops many families from accessing the support they need.

Peace of Mind

Knowing your loved one is able to recover in a suitable setting can help put your mind at ease and give you time to rest.

The Ripple Effect of Supporting Carers

When we invest in carer wellbeing, everyone benefits:

Better Emotional Health for Everyone

If you’re a carer, taking a break is sometimes essential. When carers can recharge, they can return with renewed patience, emotional capacity, and physical energy—creating better health outcomes for their loved ones.

Stronger Family Relationships

Age UK’s research shows that families who prioritise carer wellbeing experience significantly less conflict and stress. Taking respite doesn’t damage relationships—it preserves them. When carers aren’t running on empty, they can be present, engaged, and emotionally available to their loved ones.

Real Support, When It Matters Most

At Foresters Friendly Society, we understand that recovery is a family affair. Our discretionary Convalescent Grants offer financial assistance and recognition that caring for carers is essential care.

What Our Convalescent Grant Covers

Our discretionary Convalescent grants assist members recuperating after short or long illnesses by providing a stay in a convalescent home.

Foresters Friendly Society supports a convalescent home in Bridlington, Yorkshire, which has been used by thousands of our members to rest, recuperate and recover following illness.

Members may be eligible for support with costs towards a stay and non-members, such as spouses, can accompany you for an additional charge.

We also provide grants for stays in convalescent homes in other locations closer to you.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Foresters Friendly Society has spent 190 years supporting members through difficult times. We know that recovery isn’t linear, care isn’t simple, and families need support systems that work for their unique situations.

Foresters membership gives you access to:

  • Discretionary Convalescent Grants when you need recovery support
  • Access to financial assistance through our discretionary Support Fund for unexpected hardships
  • Practical and emotional support during difficult times
  • Community connection through 180+ branches hosting social events
  • Peace of mind knowing help is available when life throws challenges your way

The Bottom Line

When patients heal, it’s often with the support of a friend or family member. But sustainable care requires that carers receive support too.

Foresters’ discretionary Convalescent Grants acknowledge this reality. They provide tangible, financial support for convalescence, providing those recovering from illness time to recover and important respite for carers.
