Hadrian’s Wall – An 87-mile trek for Youth Sport Trust

Each year we select a charity for our Annual Charity Appeal, providing a national focus for the fundraising efforts of our members. For 2023/2024, the Societies President, John Springham, has selected Youth Sport Trust, a children’s charity improving every young person’s education and development through sport and play.

To help raise funds, four Foresters members (Glyn Carpenter, Alan Mackinnon, Helen Hicks, and Trish Slade) will be embarking on a walking tour along Hadrian’s Wall, also known as the Roman Wall, in the North of England. Covering 73 miles from coast to coast, Hadrian’s Wall was built to guard the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. The expedition will cover 87 miles in total and will take place over six days, beginning on the 23rd April 2024.

Foresters’ member and participant, Alan Mackinnon, said “Sport and play have the power to improve physical and mental health, foster inclusion and develop character and leadership skills. When children play, they are happy and feel a sense of belonging. When children are physically active, they are healthy and achieve. The ongoing work of the Trust wouldn’t be possible without your generous donations. All donations, big or small, would be greatly appreciated and can be made via our Just Giving page.”

John Springham, Society President, added “I’m very grateful to Alan, Glyn, Helen & Trish for taking on this trek along the length of Hadrian’s Wall, in respect of my Appeal for Youth Sport Trust. The money raised by their efforts will help young people realise the benefits of play and sport, which can only be a good thing”.

Jen Rouse, Commercial and Fundraising Director at Youth Sport Trust, commented “Embedding good habits and a love of physical activity in all children must be a national priority in order to support health and wellbeing throughout life and research suggests that going for a brisk walk of just 22 minutes once a day may be enough to offset the negative health effects of sitting too much. We are immensely grateful to Foresters for taking on this challenge, raising awareness and inspiring others to be active”.
