Building Connections: How Foresters Friendly Society Helps Tackle Loneliness in the UK

Loneliness Awareness Week (June 9–15, 2025) is an opportune moment to reflect on the real and growing issue of loneliness in everyday life. Whether it’s the quiet that lingers after a loved one moves away, the isolation of working remotely, or simply feeling disconnected from those around us, loneliness can affect anyone—at any age.

But it doesn’t have to be faced alone.

Reaching Out, Finding Belonging

For those who are part of a friendly society like ours, the word “membership” means being part of something bigger—a community where people genuinely look out for each other.

Through local groups (we call them “Courts”) and regular events, members have countless chances to connect, get involved, and share meaningful moments with others. Whether it’s joining a coach trip, taking part in a family fun day, or simply chatting over a cup of tea at a community meeting, these little moments of togetherness can make a world of difference.

The Loneliness Issue in the UK

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that around 25% of adults in the UK report feeling lonely at least some of the time. Perhaps surprisingly, younger adults aged 16–29 are among the most affected groups.

The Centre for Social Justice also reports that nearly 6 in 10 people across the UK feel lonely to some extent. Whether it’s due to bereavement, health challenges, retirement, or moving to a new area—it’s clear that loneliness is not a niche issue. It’s something many of us are quietly face.

A Community to Call Your Own

That’s why having a space where you’re known and welcomed really matters.

Our members often say it’s the social side that brings the biggest smiles. From quiz nights and wellness walks to group holidays and volunteering opportunities, there’s always something going on. Events are designed to be inclusive, relaxed, and—most importantly—fun.

And if you’re not the outgoing type, that’s okay too. There’s no pressure—just gentle encouragement and the chance to meet people at your own pace.

We All Need Each Other

Being part of a supportive, caring group of people can make a huge difference. Not just when times are tough, but in everyday life too. That’s why awareness weeks like this are so important—they remind us to reach out, to check in, and to create spaces where no one feels they must face life alone.

If you’re looking for ways to feel more connected or just want to explore something new, why not look at what’s happening in our community?
