Have a Happy Summer Holiday with Our Money Saving Tips

Money saving tips from Foresters Friendly Society

Six weeks can seem like a lifetime to a child, and with trees to climb, bikes to ride and friends living just around the corner, it may seem their every need is catered for. The holidays are also a great opportunity for busy families to spend some quality time together with parents often taking time off work to look after the children and go away for a week or two.

However, trips cost money so with the school holidays about to start, Foresters Friendly Society offers some top tips to survive this potentially demanding time on parents’ pockets.

  • When booking accommodation, travel, day trips and so on, it’s well worth asking for a discount or looking out for promotional codes; it doesn’t hurt to ask and is something we need to get better at. Also, look at websites such as www.vouchercodes.co.uk or www.promotionalcodes.org.uk before you book any trips.
  • Book early or late – if you’re super organised, you can save money by being first in line. Similarly, if you have the kind of job that allows for a bit of flexibility, you could go for a last minute booking.
  • Spread the cost – economies of scale can work. The bigger the accommodation, often the better the deal. A holiday home that sleeps 12 won’t usually cost six times the cost of a cottage for two.
  • Pack a picnic – you can spend a fortune feeding a family when you’re out and about so make sure you put something together in the morning. Farm shops or pick-your-own sites along the way can also help stock up the larder.

Commenting, Sally Waterfield at Foresters Friendly Society said: “British holidaymakers are willing to spend an average of £4,279* on their dream trip of a lifetime but struggle to put just £25 a month into a savings plan. We believe it’s important for people to rediscover the importance of long-term savings, however with so many demands on cash, it can be difficult to set aside a regular amount. Foresters has a number of affordable products including its Tax Exempt Savings Plan which requires a saving of just £25 a month. Plus, when you take out a financial policy with Foresters, you automatically gain access to the Foresters Extras member benefits package which offers a wide range of benefits from discretionary financial assistance to savings and discounts on top high street brands.”
